Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular program wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
