UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
