The UK and US have announced a significant commercial pact that will ensure zero duties on British pharmaceutical products entering the American market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost spending on drugs through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that duties on these crucial exports will be held at zero for a period of the next three years.

This agreement comes after previous threats to dramatically increase tariffs on branded drug imports, with figures discussed up to one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and introduces long-overdue balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," an announcement said.

Commercial Impact

Medicines are one of the UK's biggest export categories to the US, which is easily the largest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Export figures reveal that in the one-year period leading up to the third quarter, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This figure represented a significant portion of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This deal secures work, stimulates funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key British Pledges

The pact includes several specific commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to raise total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount manufacturers must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, repayments were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal takes place against a ongoing tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over drug pricing and regulatory access.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that US patients were paying several times more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
