As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, theoretically a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.
Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items for a profit, whereas some hunt for rare cards that can fetch sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
This policy change aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.
Hopefully, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
