The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
