The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
