Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed
Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.
Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.
A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".
The administration did not share any more details on why the talks had been postponed.
Previous Developments
Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.
Nevertheless, on this week the American president endorsed a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the present positions.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.
Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.
Political Perspectives
The "underlying reasons" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
Zelensky commented conversations concerning the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.
He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.
Weapons Discussions
Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.
Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
