New York's next mayor affirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
