On the eve of his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach took over on 20 December 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. However, that initial silverware is still his sole top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And many things need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced just after his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

With trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift notwithstanding Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

He is under a contract with a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

Arteta elaborated, emphasizing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you enter the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the strong backing from the club's ownership, while singling out the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team approaches the weekend fixture coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is likely to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Regardless of the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
