Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
