The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in all competitions for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives Nottingham Forest a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Striker nets again with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great performance with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a comfortable win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and went into this fixture with a small chance of making the top eight, even though they needed several results to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident performance will give Forest fans confidence that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the post with a header inside the opening stages for the visitors – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – the striker squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The forward's eleventh goal came early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended Ferencvaros' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead Forest scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round draw is scheduled on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another step, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a revelation for Forest in European competition this season with six of his 11 goals scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of competition for his position in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two excellent finishes and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

The forward was not alone in impressing, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from the champions in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"James was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Igor got another couple and these are positive indicators."
