Battlefield 6's Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a new playlist called Relaxed Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes a few notable adjustments:
- Every squad has only eight real players, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions performed by real players grant complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
- Only two locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, the playlist lives up to its name: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for gamers looking for different ways to enjoy the title. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 players are mad.
Player Responses: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your rivals," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," and someone else details all the issues they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," reads a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this title 24/7. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. A response via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Player Feedback
Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it could increase queue times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of playlists currently available. On a similar note, certain regions often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Lastly, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist feels like the community meeting them halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this mode as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
